The gospel is the good news that God has invaded the brokenness of this world with His redeeming grace. It is the grand story of creation, fall, redemption, and consummation ordained by God and orchestrated through the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of His Son, Jesus Christ. Christ’s crucifixion is the heart of the gospel, his resurrection is the power of the gospel, and his ascension is the glory of the gospel.
Through Christ’s atonement for sin an individual is reconciled to God as Father and becomes his child. Anyone turning from sin in repentance and looking to Christ and his substitutionary death receives the gift of eternal life and is declared righteous by God as a free gift. The righteousness of Christ is imputed to him. He is justified and fully accepted by God.
At the end of the day, all spiritual growth happens in the midst of our ongoing struggle with sin and need for grace. “We move forward when we hear afresh the strangeness of grace, relaxing our hearts and loosening our clenched hold on a litany of lesser things — financial security, the perfect spouse, career advancement, sexual pleasure, human approval, and so on.” (Dane Ortlund)
